Introduction to Machine Learning Workshop

August 13, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce machine learning (ML) to students and researchers who have data and an idea that machine learning can help in attacking their problem. We will focus more on the practical problems such as how to acquire the data, how to formulate the problem to fit an ML framework, and what to watch for when applying algorithms out of the box. Although we will have code samples in python and R, this is not a programming workshop, nor will we dive deep in the mechanics of particular algorithms. You will walk away with an understanding of what is involved in ML, what is hype and what is feasible, how the process works, and what tools and resources are available to you on and off campus. You will be expected to share your research problem and describe your data (if you don’t have a data set, please use one of several provided ones).
– Introductions – what kind of data are YOU working on
-General definitions
-Example data set – Titanic – Exploration – Data Studio
– Break – Discuss with others, try to explore your data set
– Machine Learning pipeline, Google’s AutoML, Colab, Amarel
– Break – Discuss with others, try it on your data
– Deep learning – overview; example of NLP
– Discussion
We will address the following:
– Why is dataset more important than the algorithm
– Know thy dataset!
– Where you spend most time when doing ML
– Various examples of how to formulate a ML problem – and examples of what is NOT an ML problem
– Phases of the pipeline: exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, model training, model evaluation, model prediction
– OARC, Rutgers, and online resources
– Toolkits and frameworks
– What is deep learning good for?
– Example of the titanic dataset
You will need to bring your own laptop and please have a personal Gmail account if you want to try the services yourself. Registration is limited to 20 people due to the size of the room.
