Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) announces buy-in to Rutgers’ next generation of high-performance computing

OARC is currently looking for researchers, departments, and schools interested in the first buy-in of the Amarel system.

The Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) is excited to announce the next phase in Rutgers advanced computing. In early 2017, OARC is unveiling Amarel, a “condominium” style computing environment developed to serve the university’s wide ranging research needs.

Named in honor of Dr. Saul Amarel, a Rutgers pioneer in artificial intelligence and research computing, Amarel is a shared, community-owned advanced computing environment available to any investigator or student with projects requiring research computing resources on any Rutgers campus.

Amarel offers the Rutgers community:

  • Owner access for investigators through a University-sponsored matching program
  • Owners have highest priority and are guaranteed access commensurate with investment
  • Allocations feel as close to a locally maintained and managed system as possible, but with unused cycles available to the general pool
  • Free basic-level access for the entire RU community on a first come, first served basis
  • Non-owner jobs can be preempted immediately by higher priority owner jobs
  • Racks, cabling, network interconnect, system administration, maintenance and spare nodes are all covered by OARC, allowing for highly competitive pricing
  • Uniform technical and policy elements which are sufficiently flexible to support the heterogeneity in the Rutgers environment, yet standardize and simplify management procedures, troubleshooting, and provide a seamless user experience
